"In the glare of the day there is little poetry about Venice, but under the charitable moon her stained palaces are white again…" Mark Twain
Today was a wonderful day in Venice. We started off with an early stroll, each corner we took there was another bridge and another photo opportunity. I have never known such a beautiful city. By lunch time the day trippers had arrived and it was bedlam, massive lines for the Gondalas and full restaurants. Huge bus groups following their guides. It was harder walking along the lane ways than getting out of the Adele concert in Sydney. We became frustrated and wondered what happened to beautiful Venice. We walked around in circles trying to find our way back to the hotel, every street looks the same and google maps are useless lol. By late afternoon Venice was starting to become our tranquil beauty again. We went on an evening boat ride along the Grand Canal and through loads of smaller canals and it was so peaceful and, not wanting to overuse the word, beautiful.
We’ve decided to leave our gondola ride until tomorrow evening also when the day trippers have gone. So a good tip, if you are coming to Venice, don’t do just a day trip, try to stay at least one night so you can see the beauty of it without the hoards and have your choice of gondalas and restaurants.
We wanted to try a cannoli before leaving Italy but could never fit one it so today Leisa and I had a light lunch to keep room for one. We found the biggest Cannoli ever!! Photo below and it was so perfect I could eat them every day. Superb!!
We had a lovely dinner nearby the hotel and shared entrees of caprese salad, assorted meats and Venetian style sardines (sweet & sour sardines) which was delicious. I then tried the Squid in black ink sauce with polenta which is another Venetian specialty, cooked to perfection.
